    LOS ANGELES -- (SPW) --

The Screen Actors Guild Awards® presented its coveted Actor® statuettes for the outstanding motion picture and primetime television performances of 2016 at the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® held Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. In a ceremony attended by film and television’s leading actors, the 23rd Annual SAG Awards® was simulcast live coast-to-coast by TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. (ET). A primetime encore presentation immediately followed on TNT. In addition, TBS and TNT subscribers were able to watch the SAG Awards live through the networks' websites and mobile apps.

Honored with individual awards were Denzel Washington, Emma Stone, Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis for performances in motion pictures, and Bryan Cranston, Sarah Paulson, John Lithgow, Claire Foy, William H. Macy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for performances in television. The Screen Actors Guild Awards originated awards for the outstanding performances by a motion picture cast and by television drama and comedy ensembles. The Actor® for a motion picture cast performance went this year to “Hidden Figures,” while the Actors® for television drama and comedy ensemble performances went this year to “Stranger Things” and “Orange is the New Black.”

Nominees chosen by their respective SAG Awards film and television nominating committees were announced on Dec. 14, 2016. Information on voting procedures to choose the recipients was sent to the 121,546 active voting members of SAG-AFTRA on Dec. 16. Balloting closed at noon on Friday, Jan. 27. Integrity Voting Systems, the Awards' official election teller, sealed the results until they were announced live during the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Honorees for Outstanding Action Performances by Film and Television Stunt Ensembles were revealed by SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and SAG Awards Committee Chair JoBeth Williams during the People, EW & TNT's SAG Awards®Red Carpet Live pre-show which streamed the announcement as it happened on sagawards.tntdrama.com, sagawards.org, the People/Entertainment Weekly Network (People.com/PEN), EW.com, InStyle.com,  Essence.comand Time.com.

Dolly Parton presented Lily Tomlin with the 53nd Life Achievement Award, following a filmed salute to the actor, comedian, writer, producer and all-round entertainment maverick.  Carteris introduced a filmed “In Memoriam” tribute to the SAG-AFTRA members lost during 2016, an honor roll that sadly included three past presidents of our union:  Ken Howard, Patty Duke and William Schallert; as well as two beloved Life Achievement Award recipients: Mary Tyler Moore and Debbie Reynolds.

In keeping with the SAG Awards tradition of highlighting the work of SAG-AFTRA members, guests enjoyed a touching film montage of honorees overcome by joy, gratitude and even astonishment at having their work as actors recognized and celebrated by their peers.

Time Inc.’s People and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) hosted the Screen Actors Guild Post-Awards Gala for the 21st year. This exclusive event, which was held immediately following the SAG Awards on a specially extended section of the Shrine Theater, honors the philanthropic causes and good works of the members of SAG-AFTRA. The Gala benefits the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

2026: Connect Today for a Better Tomorrow (And Beyond)

    Thursday, January 15, 2026
    Ross MacRae, CEO, Agency Source

In 2026, the thing that stands out most is how fast this industry is moving, faster than at any point I’ve seen in my career. Agencies, brands, and production companies are constantly shifting, merging, restructuring, and rebuilding. And the people inside them are moving just as quickly. The average lifespan of an agency creative these days is about 18 months. That means if you connect with someone today, chances are they’ll be somewhere completely different by next year, maybe even brand-side. The good news is that you’re essentially building a relationship with multiple clients at once - as long as you keep track of where they go! That level of movement changes what sales and outreach actually mean. When I started, sales in our industry were seen as unnecessary, even a bit smarmy. Agencies had internal service buying teams whose role was to be aware of what production services were out there--which meant that production companies and reps could remain on the agencies' radar with little effort. But today, those agency-side roles have disappeared, and the responsibility has shifted wholly to production companies and reps to make sure they are continuously visible. Whether people like the word “sales” or not, the truth is that you cannot rely on posting your reels on your site and expecting the phone to ring. It never really worked that way, and it certainly doesn’t now. One of the biggest misunderstandings I still encounter is about what a contact database is for. People assume it’s just a place to download email addresses and send out massive blasts. That was never the right way to do it, not 15... Read More
