SMPTE Hollywood will explore the evolution of HDR cinema at its February meeting. The free event, hosted by Amazon Studios, will take place on Saturday, February 11th at The Culver Theater in Culver City, California, the only theater in the western United States equipped with DCI compliant, HDR direct view screening systems.

The meeting will include presentations from Samsung on its Onyx LED cinema displays and Meyer Sound on its Ultra Reflex cinema sound system. That will be followed by a screening of The Mission, a short film produced through the American Society of Cinematographers’ Standard Evolution Material II (StEM2) project to evaluate systems for producing and displaying movie and streaming content. The Mission will be shown in both standard digital cinema brightness, 48 nits, and HDR brightness, with peaks up to 300 nits.

Additionally, Pixar Animation Studios will screen selected material from its animated features, regraded in HDR.

The Culver Theaters, formerly Arclight Culver, reopened in December with state-of-the-art display and sound technology. Owned by Amazon Studios, the 41,000 square foot venue features Samsung Onyx LED direct view cinema displays in five of its theaters (one 8K and four 4K). All six of its theaters are equipped with Meyer Sound systems with Dolby ATMOS capability.

Presenters include Bill Mandel and Des Carey (Samsung), Jay Wyatt (Meyer Sound) Jay Holben and Joachim Zell (StEM2) and Dominic Glynn (Pixar Animation Studios). The event is produced by Bill Hogan and Nick Mitchell.

Validated parking is available at 9099 Washington Blvd., 3846 Cardiff Ave. and 3844 Watseka Ave.
