In the Spotlight: Indie documentary "MOLA: A Tibetan Tale of Love and Loss"

    Austin, TX -- (SPW) --

The 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival runs March 7-15, and featured in the Documentary Spotlight section is MOLA: A Tibetan Tale of Love and Loss, the indie documentary feature from directors Yangzom & Martin Brauen. Union Editorial partners James Haygood and Michael Raimondi serve as Executive Producers with Katherine LeBlond as Co-Executive Producer on the film.

“Making vérité documentaries is an act of faith. In this case all the complexity and emotion of a mother and daughter navigating the end of life played out for the camera. So we did our best to let that universal story tell itself in a way that rang true to this special family,” said Haygood, who also serves as Supervising Editor of MOLA, joined by Consulting Editor Zach Kashkett and Additional Editors Emily Stubb, Nadine Mueller, and Rodrigo Brazão, all of Union. Graphics & Design are by Mueller and Mannix Rickenbacher, with VFX by sister company Hunter, whose Production Coordinator is Minna De Los Santos.

The film had its world premiere at the Solothurner Filmtage in Switzerland in January. MOLA: A Tibetan Tale of Love and Loss will have its North American Premiere at SXSW in March. Currently awaiting US distribution, it will be broadcast on Radiotelevisione Svizzera in the winter following a theatrical release. For more information, visit https://www.molafilm.com/.

Continuing its legacy of championing groundbreaking work through its eclectic mix of genre-busting projects, the 2025 SXSW Film & TV program includes 96 Features including 82 World Premieres, 3 International Premieres, 3 North American Premieres, 2 U.S. Premieres, 6 Texas Premieres + 57 Short Films and 18 Music Videos. The TV Program includes 16 TV projects, with 5 TV premieres, 4 TV Spotlight, and 7 Independent TV Pilots. Union’s Jason Lucas Doesn’t Cut Just “Any Asshole”

    Wednesday, March 20, 2024
Jay Larson directs Blake Griffin, Kumail Nanjiani, and others in a spec about, well, spot directing

Jason Lucas of bicoastal Union has edited comedy spots for directors like Frank Todaro (Honda/RPA), Jeff Bitsack (Build.com/Vitro), and Nick & Charles (Amazon/XCM). At the same time, he has performed standup comedy on the regular at the famed Comedy Store. These two worlds come together in his latest project, ANY ASSHOLE, the short film directing debut of longtime standup Jay Larson. Produced by Tim Case and heralding Larson’s arrival as a spot director in the Supply & Demand lineup, ANY ASSHOLE stars Larson alongside Joel McHale, Kumail Nanjiani, Blake Griffin, Hannibal Buress, Neal Brennan, Johnny Knoxville, Sarah Tiana, and Helen Hong, as he tries to find out if he has what it takes to direct commercials.

"This was one of those projects that seemed like it was too good to be true from the beginning,” beams Lucas, recalling that Union Partner/Managing Director Michael Raimondi told him an editor was needed for a short film being shot by Jay Larson, a director that Supply & Demand just signed. “I was thinking, ‘Is this the same Jay Larson I've done stand up comedy with at the Comedy Store?' Turns out it was. Then I saw the script and could hear it in Jay's voice with that thick Boston accent hitting every line.”

The 6:30 film accomplishes a high-wire act of sorts, conveying Larson’s directorial chops, while utilizing some very well-known faces in a way that is fresh, organic, and entertaining. “I had a lot of great footage to work with,” Lucas says.... Read More
