Washington Square Films-Produced Musical “The Harder They Come” Earns Five-Star Reviews, Second Run In London

Washington Square Films' Production of "The Harder They Come" a Hit on London Stage

Second Run at the Stratford East Theater Extends Into July

    LONDON -- (SPW) --

Washington Square Films’ hit musical The Harder They Come returns to London’s Theatre Royal Stratford East for 7-weeks beginning May 16. The sold-out fall 2025 production received rave reviews and smashed box office records to become the top-selling musical in the theatre’s 140-year history.

Based on the cult Jamaican film produced and directed by Perry Henzell and co-written with Trevor Rhone, The Harder They Come, the stage adaptation is by Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Suzan-Lori Parks and directed by Olivier Award–winner Matthew Xia.

The film’s soundtrack, which Rolling Stone ranked #3 on its list of the 101 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time, features music by Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Toots and The Maytals, and others, and includes the hits “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” “The Harder They Come,” “Pressure Drop,” and “Sitting in Limbo,” among others.

The stage adaptation includes three original songs by Parks, alongside other classics such as “Funky Kingston” and “I Can See Clearly Now.”

The Harder They Come premiered at The Public Theater in 2023.  It was then dramatically reworked before being brought to London in 2025.  “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to continue working on the show” says producer Joshua Blum.  “We learned a lot from our experience in New York and were able to apply it in London.”

The musical follows the story of Ivan, an aspiring singer who arrives in Kingston, Jamaica, to become a star. He falls in love and cuts a record, but his rise is blocked by corrupt gatekeepers and a rigged system. Refusing to back down, Ivan fights to assert agency over his own existence, transforming into both outlaw and folk hero. His song becomes an island-wide anthem of resistance and hope.

“It’s a love story, and action-adventure story, and it happens to have some of the best music ever written” says director Xia. “And Suzan-Lori has done some brilliant updating.”

“I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel” adds Parks, “I did however want to roll the wheel forward.”

“It’s unusual for a show to return to a theatre so soon after its original run” says producer Bruce Miller. “But we knew we had something special with The Harder They Come, and the critical and audience response at Stratford confirmed that. It made clear the show resonates far beyond this production, and this return allows us to continue building on that momentum and share it with as wide an audience as possible.”

Playwright Parks first worked with producer Blum in Washington Square Films’ very first production, The United States of Poetry, in which she read a poem at a desk in Central Park.  “When we got the rights to The Harder They Come, I couldn’t think of a better person to work on it than SLP. Her writing is fearless, her voice is singular, and she brings an extraordinary theatrical imagination. The project completely came to life when she came on board.”

Blum, Parks, Miller and Xia have worked closely with the family of the original filmmaker Perry Henzell to honor the spirit, tone, and legacy of the original film. Perry’s daughter Justine Henzell serves as Cultural and Creative Consultant and has been a deeply collaborative and critical partner throughout the process.

Beginning May 6, the show will run for seven weeks until July 4. Plans are underway for the next phase of the production, with discussions ongoing for future UK, international and US productions.

Washington Square Films is best known as a film production company having produced films for Pedro Almodóvar, Steven Soderbergh, JC Chandor and many others.  The Company also produces commercials for top brands including Apple, Pepsi, American Airlines and many others.  In addition, the company has a management division handling world renowned actors, writers and directors.

    Here I'm Alive

Here I’m Alive, the latest feature from filmmaker and Washington Square Films director Joshua Z Weinstein, has been selected for its World Premiere in the U.S. Narrative Competition at the Tribeca Festival, taking place June 3–14, 2026. Directed by Weinstein and written by Weinstein and Brian Perkins, the 81-minute feature is a raw, neo-realist urban epic set over one night in New York City. The film follows migrants, sex workers, and dreamers as they navigate the city’s digital underbelly, propelled by a sonic backdrop of underground rap and spiritual jazz. Unflinching and immersive, Here I’m Alive delivers a portrait of modern city life that is both intimate and electrifying. Weinstein is best known for his breakout feature Menashe, released by A24, which earned nominations for a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Director and an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
