Creative design/production studio yU+co announced that company Founder/Creative Director Garson Yu, will be one of this year’s featured speakers at motion 2018, to be held in Sante Fe, NM June 5-8 at the New Mexico History Museum. Yu will join a stage of design contemporaries including Kyle Cooper, Erin Sarofsky and John LePore for the “A Day of Title Design” session.

“This June, twelve years of talks, interviews, experiences and interactions designed to ‘feed your creative brain’ all come to an end,” Elaine Montoya, co-founder of motion, said. “We are so excited to have Garson Yu as part of our final chapter.”

Yu’s appearance at motion 2018 -- the unique creative event that brings together motion designers, animators, VFX artists, directors, designers, and filmmakers for 2+ days of brilliant talks, fresh ideas and spirited conversation -- comes on the heels of a particularly impressive run of creative projects for the 20 year old company that includes the opening prologue sequence and main-on-end titles for recently released “Tomb Raider,” as well as title sequences for “The Walking Dead,” “The Fate of the Furious,” “Silicon Valley” and “Justice League.”

During his session, Yu will explore the thinking behind some of the company’s best-known title sequences and demonstrate how using sound and image to emotionally connect with audiences not only invites them into the story, but also gives title design its own soul.

“Motion has become an important event in our industry thanks to its focus on the creative process, the structure of the sessions and the engaging environment it encourages,” Yu says. “I’m proud to be asked to participate and I look forward to exchanging ideas with my peers.”

Checchi Joins MUSE Award Leadership Board
In addition to Yu’s appearance at the Motion 2018 conference, Robert Checchi, yU+co’s recently added Director of Museum and Special Projects and a former Senior Exhibition Designer at The Getty Museum, Los Angeles, has been named to a two-year leadership position for the MUSE Awards, part of the American Alliance of Museums. The MUSE Awards acknowledges outstanding achievements in Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum (GLAM) media and interactive technologies.

The 29th installment of The MUSE Awards was held on Sunday, May 6, in Phoenix, AZ. Checchi is already working with fellow members of the leadership team organizing the next year’s awards.

Checchi’s appointment to the MUSE Awards leadership board follows his winning of the prestigious 2017 Gold Muse Award in the Multimedia Installations Competition for the collaboration with yU+co on The Getty exhibit “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road,” a 3D experience in which viewers entered a digital replica of one of the cave temples resplendent in art and sculpture that seemed to hang right in front of them. The successful partnership between Checchi and yU+co also yielded a 2017 AAM Excellence in Exhibitions/Special Achievement Award, and led to his decision to join yU+co earlier this year.

“Being a part of the leadership team that honors the best museum exhibits is something I’m very proud of,” Checchi says. “My collaboration with yU+co on the “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road” exhibit remains a creative highlight for me, and led me to joining the company full-time. Through my work on the MUSE Awards I’m looking to shining a spotlight on the brilliant creative minds working in this growing area of immersive design.”
