Gillette takes a detour from its celebration of the father-son relationship through its advertising. While it is the father who helps his boy learn how to shave, the reality is that two out of three South African children are raised without their father. When fathers are not involved, boys can’t turn to dad for advice. It is often the women who step up and become a father-figure.

Gillette is saluting these unsung heroes, appropriately as Women’s Day in South Africa (August 9) is being commemorated. Gillette Women’s Day Tribute shares the true story of Gogo Nozizwe, who raised her grandson Akhona by herself. Through her story and her sacrifice, Gillette honors millions more like her who are grooming a new generation of men in South Africa.

Grey Johannesburg created this spot titled “Nozizwe,” which was directed by SJ Myeza of 7 Films.
