London-based Independent Films has added director Sarah Gavron to its roster for commercials representation. Gavron first took the world of features by storm with her BAFTA Award-nominated directorial-debut Brick Lane, which also earned her The Alfred Dunhill Talent Award at the London Film Festival. Gavron went on to direct the vital and powerful film Suffragette with a cast that included Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw. Gavron’s latest film, Rocks, premiered at TIFF 2019 and was released in the U.K. in 2020 to universal acclaim. The film, centered around a group of east London schoolgirls, is heart-breaking, raw and joyful in equal measures. The cast is populated by teenagers who hadn’t acted before, and the crew was 75 per cent female. From the outset, the film was conceived as a collaborative endeavor between Gavron, the creative team and the young cast. Director Henry Scholfield has joined international production company Hamlet for representation in Asia, which includes China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and in Belgium. Scholfield made his name creating music videos for such prolific artists as Stormzy, Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish, winning Best Video for Stormzy’s “Vossi Bop” and then picking up Best Director at the 2019 UK MVAs. Dua Lipa’s “Break My Heart” won Best UK Pop Video at the 2020 UKMVAs last month where he was again nominated for Best Director. The Gotham Film & Media Institute has announced that Academy Awardยฎ-winner Angelina Jolie will receive the Performer Tribute for her performance as Maria Callas in Pablo Larrainโs upcoming film Maria, at the 34th edition of The Gothams, taking place on Monday, December 2, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The tribute will honor Jolieโs rendition of legendary opera singer Callas.
