    Alex Russell
    LOS ANGELES --

Arts & Sciences has signed director Alex Russell to its roster of talent. Recognized for his work across film and television, Russell now brings his cinematic sensibilities to the world of advertising.

His debut feature, Lurker, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and was later acquired by MUBI. The psychological thriller earned Russell a DGA Award nomination for Best First-Time Theatrical Feature, along with nominations for a Gotham Award and four Independent Spirit Awards.

Russell is also an Emmy Award winner for his work as a writer and supervising producer on Netflix and A24’s Beef, which returns for its second season this April. A prolific voice in television, he began his career writing for the first two seasons of FX’s Dave and later joined FX’s The Bear as a writer and supervising producer—penning the acclaimed episode “Forks,” which earned a WGA Award nomination. Most recently, he served as a producer on the Hulu series Interior Chinatown.

Already off to an auspicious start with Arts & Sciences, Russell directed the Cash App commercial “Desert Diner” promoting the F1 tortoise livery reveal for the VCARB team (Visa Cash App Racing Bulls), and the platform’s Tortoise Card. This card, inspired by Shaboozey’s style, also brought the country music star to Russell’s set, with the musician also starring in the spot alongside Barstool Sports’ Caleb Pressley. Russell expertly lensed this film, bringing motorsport and culture together with eye-catching frames and dryly comedic performances.

Russell said, “My partnership with Arts & Sciences felt like a natural continuation of our work together on Lurker. I’m grateful for their ongoing support and for having found a home within this company!”

Mal Ward, managing director and partner, Arts & Sciences, said, “We got to intimately know Alex during the making of Lurker, and over that journey, we saw an incredibly gifted human being with big talent and something to say. His ability to craft compelling stories across some of the strongest episodic TV of the last decade, and now with film, makes Alex a substantial addition to Arts & Sciences’ roster.”

Charli xcx Shares “The Moment”–Marking Aidan Zamiri’s Feature Directing Debut–At Sundance

    Sunday, January 25, 2026

Charli xcx plays herself in "The Moment," a meta mockumentary about the end of Brat summer and grappling with otherworldly success.

"I was just really interested in telling this story about expectation," Charli xcx told The Associated Press the day after "The Moment" debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.

The 33-year-old pop star from Essex has been in the music industry since she was 16, with a career trajectory that she described as anything but straight forward. Then, in 2024, it hit a crescendo with her sixth studio album, "Brat," which became a pop culture phenomenon. Finally, she said, she felt understood for a moment. And then, just as quickly, it changed.

"There was this sort of, kind of, you know, persona that people really associated me with and then there were a lot of expectations put on me as a person, as an artist, of who I was then supposed to be. And I didn't fit into that sort of narrative," she said. "I had got to this place where I was finally feeling so understood. Then I was like not understood again."

Making something immensely popular and resonant can be a double-edged sword for an artist working in a business that would sometimes rather milk the "sure thing" forever than let someone evolve and move on. She found herself wanting to grapple with that tension, that existential conundrum that she'd experienced.

Charli xcx likes a "meta moment"

A straightforward documentary didn't seem like right approach, so she and Aidan Zamiri, the 30-year-old Scottish photographer and music video director, got to work on something else, something that felt truer to them. "The Moment" is a little "This is Spinal Tap," a little "Black Swan," a little meta, with the likes of Kylie Jenner and Rachel Sennott playing... Read More
