Szymon Rose (l) and Daniel Schaefer
    LOS ANGELES --

After signing with Arts & Sciences London in 2025, the directing duo Daniel&Szymon has now also joined the boutique production company’s roster in the U.S. This marks the first commercial representation stateside for the helming team which consists of former Jung von Matt chief creative officers Daniel Schaefer and Szymon Rose.

Already known for their rich cinematic palette and directing scenes with emotional depth, Daniel&Szymon’s films are ornately detailed with candid moments of human vulnerability. Their recent work for Erste Bank, “Carry the Light,” thoughtfully tells the story of the first Christmas through the eyes of a donkey. “Carry the Light,” out of agency Jung von Matt in Vienna, Austria, earned inclusion in SHOOT’s The Best Work You May Never See gallery in December 2025. Dedicated to creating films that feel immersive and authentic, Daniel&Szymon ventured to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco for “Carry the Light,” bringing with them experts on ancient Aramaic to ensure the dialogue felt true to the times.

This approach to directing is also seen in other work for Erste Bank, which includes sensitive, narrative-driven spots such as “Life Stories,” “The Audition,” and last year’s Christmas opus, “Silent Night,” which earned two Clios. In their inaugural year as commercial directors, Daniel&Szymon also helmed spots for European brands Migros and Persil, and were nominated for AICP’s Best New Director in 2025.

Prior to directing, the duo built successful careers as advertising creatives, developing campaigns for brands such as Facebook, Hyundai, Axe, Samsung, and LEGO, among many others. Their work has earned assorted major industry honors, including Cannes Lions, British Arrows, and D&AD Pencils.

In a joint statement, Schaefer and Rose shared, “We’ve admired the work coming out of Arts & Sciences in the U.S. for years, so joining their roster feels a little like sneaking into a very cool club we’ve long wanted to be part of. We’re hugely grateful and excited for what’s next.”

“This feels like the natural next step for Daniel&Szymon,” remarked Mal Ward, Arts & Sciences’ managing director and partner. “Their debut year as directors at Arts & Sciences London has been impressive to say the least. With their incredible creative pedigree, they know what goes into making standout work, and their reputation is stellar. We’re excited to be representing them in the U.S–we know they’ll do amazing things.”

Acceptance Remarks For Oscar-Winning Long and Short-Form Documentaries Strike Political and Emotional Chords

    Monday, March 16, 2026

"Mr. Nobody Against Putin," which takes on the Russian leader's propaganda and patriotism program for the nation's youth after the invasion of Ukraine, won the Oscar for best documentary feature Sunday. "In the name of our future, in the name of all of our children, stop all of these wars now," the film's protagonist and co-director Pavel Talankin said in Russian from the stage through a translator. Talankin was a teacher and activities director in a small-town school in Russia who captured on video his students' lessons, chants and songs promoting the war in Ukraine. He smuggled his hard drives out of the country to collaborate with American director David Borenstein, who lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. The two men gave the night some of its most overtly political moments during their speeches. Talankin said backstage that his students helped him write his. Borenstein spoke broadly about nations tipping into totalitarianism, while clearly emphasizing similarities between his country and Talankin's. "'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' is about how you lose your country," Borenstein said. "You lose it through countless small little acts of complicity." Cheers in the auditorium grew as Borenstein said you lose a country when "we don't say anything" when governments kill people in the streets and oligarchs seek to consolidate control over media outlets. "We all face a moral choice, but luckily even a nobody is more powerful than you think," Borenstein said. Asked about the award, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment, saying he hasn't seen the documentary. The war in Ukraine has loomed large in Oscar documentary categories since its beginning in 2022. The Associated Press' documentary "20 Days in Mariupol" won best documentary... Read More
