    LOS ANGELES --

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) has unveiled the shortlists for below-the-line film categories for the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards: Best Casting and Ensemble, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Production Design, Best Score, Best Song, Best Sound, Best Stunt Design, and Best Visual Effects. This marks the first time that the CCA has honored below-the-line disciplines across the board. A special BTL Nominating Committee created the shortlists for the 11 below-the-line categories. Write-in votes will be allowed for films that were not available for viewing prior to November 24, so long as they are available prior to December 3.

“Sinners” topped the Critics Choice Awards shortlists, earning recognition in all categories. Three songs from the film were shortlisted for the Best Song category including “I Lied to You,” “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” and “Pale, Pale Moon,” garnering “Sinners” a total of 13 spots on the shortlists. “F1,” “Frankenstein,” and “Wicked: For Good” followed, with each project being recognized in nine categories total.

As previously announced, comedian, television host, and seven-time New York Times best-selling author Chelsea Handler will return as host of the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards, marking her fourth consecutive year in that role. Returning to E! for the second year in a row, the telecast will also air live on USA Network on Sunday, January 4, 2026 from 7:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The star-studded show will once again be held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and will continue its combined film and television awards format, honoring the best in cinematic, televised, and streaming achievement. Notably, four new categories have been added to this year’s show: Best Variety Series, Best Stunt Design, Best Casting and Ensemble, and Best Sound.

Select TV and Film category nominations for the annual event will first be announced at 9 a.m. PT on Friday, December 5 on E! and USA Network linear channels, along with E! Online, as well as E!’s, USA’s, and CCA’s YouTube channels.

The Critics Choice Awards are bestowed annually to honor the finest in cinematic and television achievement. The 31st annual Critics Choice Awards show will be executive-produced by Bob Bain Productions and Berlin Entertainment.

    Review: Writer-Director BenDavid Grabinski’s “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice”

    Wednesday, March 25, 2026
This image released by 20th Century Studios shows Eiza González and James Marsden, right, in a scene from "Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice." (20th Century Studios via AP)

"Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice" might look like a somewhat generic, glossy action-comedy on the surface. It's got two (well, kind of three, but we'll get to that later) men north of 50 ( Vince Vaughn and James Marsden ), one woman south of 40 (Eiza González) and the promise of some violence (you know, the fun kind). That's not necessarily a bad thing — sometimes you get a "This Means War" or a "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." But in the streaming era, more often than not you get, I don't know, "Red One"?"Fountain of Youth"? Something else we've already all forgotten? This might also be a streaming-era production, debuting on Hulu and Disney+ on Friday, but it's clear from the very first moments that "Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice" isn't just a generic facsimile of a "fun" movie designed for more for the algorithm than anyone's amusement. No, this is a movie that begins, for no particular reason other than probably the delight of the filmmakers, with Ben Schwartz singing "Why Should I Worry?" a song that was written and sung by Billy Joel for the 1988 animated Disney movie "Oliver & Company," a modern, New York City-set take on Charles Dickens starring dogs. Is it related to anything? No. Is it a fun song to set the tone that also made this elder millennial critic smile? Yes. There are choices like this throughout the film, mostly through precise, lighthearted banter that sounds real. There's even a spirited debate about the best and worst boyfriends on "Gilmore Girls" — Rory's, not Lorelai's, which falls a little flat in execution. I'm not sure the actors' hearts are really invested in Logan and Jess the way, say, Liam Neeson was able to act genuinely distraught over his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episodes being deleted off his DVR in "The...
