From Baran bo Odar, Director of “Who Am I,” and The Producers of “The Lives Of Others,” Comes The First German Netflix Original Series “Dark”

    LOS ANGELES -- (SPW) --

Dark, a family saga with a supernatural twist, will debut exclusively on Netflix in 2017.

The first German production from the world’s leading Internet TV Network is set in a German town in present day where the disappearance of two young children exposes the double lives and fractured relationships among four families. In ten, hour-long episodes, the story takes on a supernatural twist that ties back to the same town in 1986

Dark is directed by Baran bo Odar, whose latest critically-acclaimed film Who am I – No System is safe, starring Tom Schilling and Elyas M’Barek, was a German box office sensation. Who am I premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014, won three German Movie Awards and the Bambi for “Best German Film.” Odar’s next film will be Sleepless Night with Oscar®-Winner Jamie Foxx.

“We’re very excited to shoot the first Netflix original series made in Germany. To be part of the family that brought amazing shows like House of Cards and Bloodline to its audience is a huge honor,” said Odar. “As Dark will be an ensemble mystery series, I especially look forward to discovering and working with new German talent. This will be a fantastic ride and I can’t wait to get started.”

Writer Jantje Friese added, “The way Dark was embraced by Netflix was extraordinary. We’re so happy to be making this show in Germany for Netflix subscribers around the world to enjoy. We couldn’t be happier to team up again with Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann and Justyna Müsch as production partners, who have already shown with Who Am I that they can take an idea the extra mile.”

“Dark is an incredible German story that will appeal to a global audience,” said Erik Barmack, Vice President International Originals at Netflix. “Bo and Jantje are creative talents that have developed great projects in both Berlin and Hollywood, and we are thrilled to be working with them on our first original series entirely authored, shot and produced in Germany.”

“Dark is a milestone for the German market and for us as a company,” said producer and co-founder Quirin Berg. “Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are outstanding talents and we are glad they shared this amazing idea with us. We feel privileged to continue our collaboration with both of them and we are all thrilled to join forces with a great team at Netflix to create something truly unique.”

Production is expected to start in 2016 with the series debut worldwide on Netflix in 2017.

    About the director
Baran bo Odar was born in Switzerland in 1978. After studying Directing at the University of Television & Film Munich (HFF) he worked on several commercials, music videos and award-winning short films. His feature debut The Silence (2010) premiered at the Piazza Grande in Locarno and gained him a spot as one of Variety’s Ten Directors to Watch in 2011.

    About Wiedemann & Berg
Sharing their passion for film, Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann became friends at school and founded their company while still at University in 2003. Since then, Wiedemann & Berg has become one of the leading German production companies for both film and television. Constantly producing innovative, award-winning and high quality fictional content, their projects include several of the highest rated TV programs and numerous hits at the German box-office. Their first feature film The Lives of Others won an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film and fascinated audiences worldwide. Among recent productions are the international thriller Friend Request and the hacker thriller Who am I – No System is safe.

AICP Awards Tour Continues To San Francisco

    Tuesday, September 16, 2025
Tor Myhren, Vice President of Marketing Communications at Apple, and Matt Miller, President and CEO of AICP.

The AICP Awards tour heads to the Bay Area on September 29th with a special presentation at The Exploratorium: In Conversation with Tor Myhren: Elevating the Apple Brand Through Craft, Creativity & Humanity. The AICP Awards Tour travels globally, offering the opportunity to see selected pieces from the suite of AICP Awards competitions, and hear discussion and insights about the work. These panels and conversations - unique to each venue - focus on the winning work, and may include Curators and Judges from the awards. Tor Myhren, Vice President of Marketing Communications at Apple, sits down with Matt Miller, President and CEO of AICP, for a fireside chat about the enduring power of well crafted storytelling and human connection that has grown their product-lines and been continuously recognized by the industry. For the past several years, Apple has been among the most recognized brands in the AICP Awards, topping the list as the most awarded brand since 2023. This year saw 10 wins across the AICP Show - including Advertising Excellence (Best of Show) for “Flock” - as well as three wins in the AICP Next Awards and two in the AICP Post Awards. Myhren served as an AICP Show Curator this year (he was recused from voting on Apple work), but was instrumental to helping shape the Show. The event kicks off at 6 pm with a happy hour, followed by the presentation at 7 pm, and concludes with a reception. The Exploratorium is located at Pier 15 on The Embarcadero. Tickets... Read More
