    LOS ANGELES --

"Elvis," "Top Gun: Maverick," "The Banshees of Inisherin," "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio" were among the feature film winners at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) 70th annual Golden Reel Awards during a gala ceremony at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

"Elvis" topped the music editing category for a feature motion picture while "Top Gun: Maverick" took the sound editing-feature effects/foley category. "The Banshees of Inisherin" was honored for feature dialogue/ADR, "All Quiet on the Western Front" won for outstanding sound editing in a foreign language feature, and "Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio" lorded over the sound editing/feature animation category. Additionally "Good Night Oppy" topped the feature documentary sound editing competition.

Golden Reel winners in television included episodes of "The Crown," "The Bear" and "Stranger Things."  The latter scored a pair of wins: for achievement in sound editing–broadcast long form effects/foley (for the “Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab” episode; and achievement in music editing (“Chapter Nine: The Piggyback” episode).

“Top Gun: Maverick” actor-producer Tom Cruise and director Joe Kosinksi presented the MPSE Filmmaker Award to pioneering producer Jerry Bruckheimer. (Cruise’s appearance was pre-recorded.) Academy Award-nominated supervising sound editor Al Nelson MPSE and Academy Award-winning supervising sound editor Lora Hirschberg presented the MPSE Career Achievement Award to Academy Award-nominated supervising sound editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle MPSE.

The opening address was given by MPSE president Mark Lanza who congratulated the nominees and highlighted the organization’s success in promoting the art of entertainment sound. “Sound editors play a crucial role in bringing films, television shows, and games to life,” he said. “This year, we have seen truly incredible sound editing. From the explosive action of blockbusters to the subtle nuances of character-driven dramas, sound editors have shown the power of sound to engage, entertain, and move us.”

Emmy Award‐winning actor, comedian, and author Patton Oswalt hosted the awards ceremony.

Andrew Stanton Grows Up With “Toy Story” For 30+ Years–and Counting

Andrew Stanton has spent more than half his life with "Toy Story." He was the lead writer on the first three, a script savior on the fourth, and now, cowriter and co-director on "Toy Story 5." "It wasn't the plan," he said in a recent interview. "But it wasn't not the plan." Stanton has done other things than think about Woody and Buzz for the past 34 years. At Pixar, he made "A Bug's Life" and two Oscar-winners: "Finding Nemo" and "WALL-E." But "Toy Story" was the movie that started it all. The one he and his peers couldn't believe they got to make. The past two movies made more than a billion dollars and this one is likely on the same path. But while there is a business driving many of the decisions regarding the series, Stanton said they've also had a lot of time to think about where the story should go. It's show business, yes, but they always try to put the "show" first. Remember, there was an 11-year gap between "Toy Story 2" and "Toy Story 3," and nine more years before the fourth movie. It was around 2008, when they'd finally cracked the story for three, and decided that it would be the end of their time with Andy as he went off to college, that Stanton started to think wider. "What if it went farther? What if it was a trilogy with one kid, closed that up, handed it off to another kid and started another one?" Stanton said. "That seemed really exciting to me because that's the way life really goes with toys and mementos. They get passed down as hand-me-downs; they go from one kid to another." Midway through the Bonnie era One thing Stanton doesn't love about the Toy Story... Read More
