The Fox network has cast Maya Rudolph to help lead the live TV musical "A Christmas Story" this winter.

The "Saturday Night Live" veteran and star of "Bridesmaids" will play the mother of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker, the boy at the center of the musical who dreams of landing an air rifle for Christmas.

The show will air Dec. 17. More casting will be announced later.

The Broadway production of "A Christmas Story: The Musical" opened in 2012 with a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, recent Tony Award winners for the musical "Dear Evan Hansen." It was nominated for three Tony Awards, including best musical, best book and best original score.

The musical is based on the 1983 film, which was based on Jean Shepherd's semiautobiographical story.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. --

David Letterman, the longest-serving host in U.S. late night television--the original host of Late Night (NBC) and The Late Show (CBS) --is returning to television for a new series for Netflix.

The yet-to-be-named, six-episode series has Letterman combining two interests for which he is renowned: in-depth conversations with extraordinary people, and in-the-field segments expressing his curiosity and humor. In each hour-long episode, Letterman will conduct a long-form conversation with a singular guest - and will also explore topics on his own, away from the studio. The series is set to premiere in 2018.

Said Letterman, “I feel excited and lucky to be working on this project for Netflix. Here's what I have learned, if you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first. Thanks for watching, drive safely.”

"Just meeting David Letterman was a thrill; imagine how exciting it is for me to announce that we will More

LOS ANGELES (AP) --

The estate of Michael Jackson says a 3-D version of the late singer's iconic "Thriller" video is set to debut at the Venice Film Festival more than 30 years after its original premiere.

The estate says the "latest available technology" was used to convert the 14-minute short film from an original 35mm negative to 3-D.

Although the film wasn't reedited or recut in any way, director John Landis says he was able to "use the 3-D creatively" and promises "a rather shocking surprise."

"Michael Jackson's Thriller" debuted in theaters and on television in 1983. An hour-long documentary detailing the making of the video will also screen at the Venice festival, which runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 9.

Jackson died in 2009 at the age of 50.

NEW YORK (AP) --

Netflix says it made its first acquisition, comic book publisher Millarworld, with plans to turn its characters into new films and shows for the video streaming service.

Millarworld's graphic novels "Kick-Ass," ''Wanted" and "Kingsman" have already been turned into movies by major studios.

Los Gatos, California-based Netflix did not disclose on Monday how much it paid for Millarworld.

Netflix has been spending heavily for original movies and shows, such as "House of Cards" and "Orange Is The New Black," to attract new viewers and stand apart from rival services.

Netflix reported in July that it had more than 100 million subscribers worldwide.

NEW YORK (AP) --

An unlikely outsider wins political office: Sound familiar?

ABC's new sitcom "The Mayor" has its own version, set in an economically depressed town where a young rapper runs for mayor just to generate publicity for his music — but much to everyone's shock —  especially his — is elected.

The series was created by Jeremy Bronson, a self-proclaimed political junkie whose credits include producing MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews."

Bronson told reporters Sunday that, in his news days, he loved stories where an outsider challenged the system. That inspired his new comedy.

The diverse cast includes Lea Michele ("Glee") and stars Brandon Micheal Hall as the man with an unexpected mission to make things better.

Hall says his series is "based on hope. Because that's something we really need right now."

NEW YORK (AP) --

HBO, which acknowledged Monday that hackers had broken into its systems and stolen "proprietary information," now says the attackers likely haven't breached the network's entire email system.

In a Wednesday email to employees, CEO Richard Plepler wrote that "we do not believe that our email system as a whole has been compromised."

He added that a review continues, and said HBO is hiring an outside firm to help employees monitor their financial accounts.

Purported hackers said in email that they'd accessed HBO's internal network and email system and then posted stolen information online. An archived version of the named website appeared to have links to downloadable episodes for several HBO shows, including "Insecure" and
"Ballers," and what it said was a link to "script & film" to two "Game of Thrones" episodes, including an upcoming one.

AP did not test the links. The site was not loading Wednesday afternoon.

LOS ANGELES (AP) --

The premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery" on CBS' subscription streaming service, CBS All Access, was postponed nine months to maintain the quality of the brand.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman told the Television Critics Association Tuesday that they "spent a lot of time" discussing how to create this new world for TV that felt authentic to the "Star Trek" universe.

Also during that time, executive producer Bryan Fuller decided to exit the series as showrunner to focus on other projects.

Kurtzman said "it became clearer and clearer" that the targeted January debut would "compromise the quality of the show," so it was pushed with the blessing of CBS Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves.

"Star Trek: Discovery" stars Sonequa Martin-Green of "The Walking Dead," as central character, First Officer Michael Burnham. She's the foster daughter of the Vulcan Sarek, who is Spock's father.
