Danny Bush, Cynthia Tollet promoted at DGA

LOS ANGELES -- 

Russell Hollander, DGA national executive director, has announced the promotion of two Guild executives. Danny Bush has been promoted to associate national executive director/Western executive director and Cynthia Tollett has been promoted to assistant executive director. 
 
Bush will join associate national executive directors Bryan Unger and David Korduner in focusing on the growing challenges of national and international representation of directors and their teams in all genres represented by the DGA. He will also continue his regional responsibility, as Western executive director, for administration of the West Coast Office. Bush will report to Hollander.

Tollett, previously associate general counsel in the Guild’s legal department, will step into a new role overseeing the signatories department, and will be more involved in the enforcement of the Guild’s contracts. She will report to Bush.

“I am pleased that Danny will be joining Bryan and David in focusing on the big-picture issues affecting our members as the film and TV landscape continues to shift technologically and globally,” said Hollander. “Cynthia has been an invaluable part of our Legal team with a deep understanding of our Guild’s contracts, and our members will benefit as she applies her expertise in this new role.”

Bush joined the DGA in 2012 as an assistant executive director in the Guild’s Los Angeles headquarters, focusing on areas related to representation, contract enforcement and organizing. He was promoted to Western executive director in 2015--overseeing a substantial expansion of the Guild’s Contracts department, as well as the growing Western field representative program that visits members on film, TV and commercial sets, sporting events, and local stations across the country and in Canada. 
 
Bush came to the DGA from Bush Gottlieb, a union-side labor law firm, where he was an attorney representing public and private sector labor unions, and also served as lead negotiator for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Previously, he worked for the SEIU as an organizer. Bush received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis and his J.D. from Yale Law School.

Cynthia Tollett
Tollett joined the DGA in 2009 as an attorney, and was promoted in 2015 to associate general counsel. Tollett joined the Guild from Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton where she was an attorney focused on mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance issues. She received a B.A. from the University of Texas, an M.A. from Rice University, and a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law.

Mike Wilson named associate creative director at Ron Foth Advertising

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- 

Ron Foth Advertising has promoted Mike Wilson to associate creative director. In his new role at the Columbus-based agency, he will help lead the shop in conceptual art direction, as well as traditional and digital design for all clients.

Wilson joined the Foth agency in March 2016 as sr. art director. He was recruited from Indianapolis agency Three Sixty Group, where he spent eight years as creative director. Prior to joining Three Sixty Group in 2008, he spent over three years as sr. VP, associate creative director with Pearson Partners in Indianapolis. That followed two years as VP, associate creative director with Pearson McMahon Fletcher England, and over three and a half years as a sr. art director with the agency before that.

In his time at Foth, he’s created award-winning campaigns for the California Academy of Sciences, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern, the Columbus Zoo and others. He also led the redesign and launch of the agency’s new website, ronfoth.com.  

Over the course of his 20-year career, Wilson has worked with brands including BMW, Fifth Third Bank, hhgregg, USA Gymnastics, the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

FCB NY adds creative duo Carrion and Bistene

NEW YORK -- 

The creative team of Fernando Carrion and Rodrigo Bistene has joined FCB New York as sr. copywriter and sr. art director, respectively. The duo, aka The Raccoons, comes over from VML.

Hailing from Mexico and Brazil, Carrion and Bistene are most renowned for their work in creating the Proud Whopper campaign for Burger King, winner of 13 Cannes Lions, and for convincing people to follow Pepto Bismol on Twitter.

The Raccoons moniker springs, in their own words, from they’re being “social creatures who like to work in groups. We appear to be harmless but we can turn pretty wild when an opportunity arises. But more than anything, we can easily find hidden food and fall asleep in unexpected places.”

Editor Nate Cali joins Nomad

Nomad has added editor Nate Cali to its roster. Cali, who will be based in the Santa Monica office, has cut campaigns for clients including Nike, Reebok, Red Bull, Taco Bell, Capital One and Funny or Die. 

Prior to Nomad, Cali had worked at both Union Editorial as well as Optimus, where he progressed from an assistant editor to a partner in the company.

While at the Los Angeles Film School, Cali studied under Danford B. Greene, who cut Blazing Saddles. “My mother was a stand-up comedian, he said. “I always knew I wanted to cut comedy. Danford taught me how to make people laugh by highlighting reactions instead of actions.”

Grace Gibbons, Catherine Watson join Young & Laramore

Young & Laramore, a creative agency based in Indianapolis, has appointed Grace Gibbons as its newest account manager and Catherine Watson as associate account manager.

Gibbons will manage, review and deliver projects for Y&L’s KraftMaid Cabinetry client. She will be reporting directly to VP of account management, Nick Prihoda. Prior to joining Young & Laramore, Gibbons served as account associate at Willow Marketing.
 
As associate account manager, Watson will be working with clients including Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, American Standard and Matilda Jane. Before joining the team, she served as account executive at Curiosity 360 where she worked with brands such as Cincinnati Bell, MedVet Emergency and Specialty Animal Hospital.

John Ciampa to head Mr. Wolf's newly formed NYC studio

NEW YORK -- 

Visual effects boutique Mr. Wolf, based in Culver City, Calif., has opened a studio in NYC under the aegis of creative director John Ciampa. The new operation, located within the postproduction facility Post FactoryNY, will provide visual effects and finishing services for features, television, broadcast media, advertising and other projects. Mr. Wolf is known for its work on features American Hustle, Hercules, The Brother’s Grimsby and Allegiant. Its New York operation has already completed work for MTV’s Teen Wolf, SPIKE’s Adam Carolla and Friends Build Stuff, and VH-1’s America’s Next Top Model and Leave It to Stevie.

Like the company’s Culver City operation, the new site features a flexible IT infrastructure that enables it to quickly scale up or adapt its workflow to meet the needs of assignments of varying size and needs. In addition to tackling New York-based projects, it will provide supplementary support to the team in California.

“We’re extending the model that has worked so well on the West Coast,” said EP Mike Pryor who launched Mr. Wolf in 2014 with creative directors Danny Yoon and Duy Nguyen. “It’s creative solutions through unparalleled client service.” Pryor added that the two offices share a data link that allows them to collaborate. Both sides have already teamed up on projects for the television series Channel Zero (SyFy), The Goldbergs (ABC), Kevin Can Wait (CBS), and The OA (Netflix) as well as the Peter Berg- directed Patriot’s Day. They are currently in production on Nicole Holofcener’s Land of Steady Habits which recently finished shooting.

Ciampa worked as a New York-based independent for the past nine years, most recently focusing on broadcast media for VH-1, MTV and other Viacom channels. Previously, he spent 11 years in Los Angeles, where he held staff posts with View Studios, Pittard Sullivan, and Ring of Fire. A talented compositor, visual effects artist and creative director, he has worked across features, television, broadcast and commercials.

Ciampa said he views his arrival at Mr. Wolf as a reunion as he previously worked with Pryor, Yoon and Nguyen at Ring of Fire. “It’s been 25 years of amazing opportunities, including commercials, movies, graphics and TV,” he noted. “Mostly I’m grateful for the people and collaborations. And now I feel inspired and energized to be working with Danny, Duy and Mike again.”

Erica Jacquez to head government affairs for DGA

Erica Jacquez will join the Directors Guild of America (DGA) as executive in charge of government affairs later this month. 

Russell Hollander, associate national executive director of the DGA, said of Jacquez, “Her deep experience in government affairs and in D.C. will be a significant asset in advocating for our members on the critical policy issues that impact their work and economic and creative rights. We look forward to putting her expertise to use on behalf of our membership.”

Jacquez will be responsible for the Guild’s federal legislative and governmental work, and will serve as an advocate for the DGA and its members on key issues such as intellectual property, copyright and anti-piracy protections; federal and state incentives for runaway film and television production; and issues relating to the protection of DGA members’ creative and economic rights. Jacquez will also coordinate and manage the work of the DGA Political Action Committee (PAC) and DGA PAC Leadership Council. 
 
Jacquez comes on board following the retirement of longtime government affairs executive Kathy Garmezy. Jacquez joins the Guild from AltaMed Health Services--a network of community health care providers for underserved communities throughout Southern California--where she was associate VP of government relations. In Washington D.C., she served as a legislative analyst at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and prior to that as a Congressional relations officer at the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. Earlier in her career Jacquez was the main community liaison for Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina.
 
Jacquez received both her doctorate in policy, planning and development, and M.P.A. from the University of Southern California. She earned her B.A. in criminal justice from California State University, Fullerton. She is also a graduate of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Executive Leadership Program.

Cowley named head of prodn/sr VFX supervisor at FuseFX, Vancouver

VANCOUVER, BC -- 

FuseFX has hired 18-year visual effects industry veteran Jon Cowley as head of production and sr. VFX supervisor at its production facility in Vancouver. Cowley will oversee production activity and lead its team of VFX supervisors on projects including the television series Zoo and Mist. He brings deep experience as a manager, supervisor and artist with credits including the blockbusters Furious 7, TRON: Legacy, The Great Gatsby, and District 9. Most recently, he served as a client-side VFX supervisor on the Netflix television series Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

According to David Altenau, president of FuseFX, Cowley will work closely with EP Wendy Lanning to lead the Vancouver office.

With a background in industrial engineering, fine arts, design and animation, Cowley began his career as a computer graphics artist in his native Toronto with credits including Panic Room and Jason X. He earned his first credit as VFX supervisor on the Disney television movie A Wrinkle in Time. Since then, he has acted in supervisory roles on more than 30 motion picture and television projects with other highlights including Smallville, Total Recall and Men in Black 3.

“Successful supervision is a blend of decisive leadership and an eye for the bigger picture,” he said. “We make sequences, not shots. We create pictures, but we also tell stories. For artists to thrive and deadlines to be met, VFX has to constantly rebalance, re-evaluate and innovate. It’s my goal to bring that mindset to every project.”

Bikini Edit Adds 4 Editors To Spot Roster

NEW YORK -- 

Creative editors Lisa Mogol, Cindy Nielsen, Christopher Pensiero and Bryan Wetzel have joined the commercial roster of Bikini Edit. 

Mogol was previously at Moondog Editorial, and prior to that, Company X and Mad River Post. Well known for breakthrough extended-length projects for Ralph Lauren, Sports Illustrated and Vault Soda, Mogol also has to her credit the feature film “Sting: When the Last Ship Sails” and music videos for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Hopewell and Travis. Her short-form reel spans from the epic to the very personal, serving brands such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Folgers, Jif, Jockey, Michael Kors, Pepsi and Smuckers in the past year alone--including three separate campaigns for major Olympic sponsors in 2016.

Nielsen’s earlier staff positions at Homestead Editorial and Chinagraph Editorial helped perfect her craft on numerous prominent campaigns. Before beginning her freelance career in 2007, she had already cut campaigns for Claritin, Dove, Hershey’s, Maybelline and Philips (Cannes Gold Cyber Lion winner, Effie Gold and Silver Award winner, among many others) via agencies Euro, Gotham, Ogilvy, Rapp Collins, Tribal Worldwide, Y&R and more. In 2010, Nielsen launched Eye Candy Edit in partnership with Pensiero, who is her husband. Nielsen freelanced via Eye Candy.

Another NYC-based editor who came into his own at Chinagraph Editorial, Pensiero also focused on editing during his seven years with the company, which followed many years of production work on feature films. Spreading his wings as a freelance editor in 2006, Pensiero landed at the aforementioned Eye Candy Edit. He has cut assorted notable commercials over the past decade, and among his long-form credits are the documentary Swing State Ohio and the narrative features 12 and Holding, Hounddog and AWOL.

Freelancing over the past several years, Wetzel has been active in commercials and documentary fare. His most recent spot credits include campaigns for Comcast, IBM, Lowes, Starburst, Tide, UPS, Verizon FIOS and Wendy’s. His ongoing documentary work for the ALS Foundation also stands out among Wetzel’s many passion projects.

Bikini Edit was founded by editor/owner Avi Oron in 1990. The studio launched in 2016 the SITE 57 gallery program creating public showing opportunities for a diverse range of artist while enhancing Bikini’s environment for creative work. SITE 57 is housed in a 1,400 square foot storefront gallery adjacent to the Bikini Edit offices in NYC. Cary Flaum is EP of Bikini Edit.

Editor Chris Kursel joins Bandit

NEW YORK -- 

Editorial shop Bandit, formerly known as Fluid, has added editor Chris Kursel to its roster. Kursel brings to the NY boutique more than a decade of experience cutting spots for brands such as Google, Starbucks, Twitter, Cadillac, American Express, Verizon Wireless and Samsung. He comes to Bandit after six years at Lost Planet where his work spanned collaborations with Wieden+Kennedy, 72andSunny, mcgarrybowen and Goodby Silverstein & Partners, among other agencies.

Kursel is also active in projects beyond commercials. He earned a Best Editing award at the Boston Film Festival for his work on the feature film All Mistakes Buried, Kursel also worked with three-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer Bob Richardson on two back-to-back short films, Mandible and Wild Horses. Kursel’s credits additionally include the feature documentaries Branca’s Pitch and Andy. The latter documentary delves into the story of famed deceased surfer Andy Irons.

Milwaukee-native Kursel studied film at Boston University and broke into the industry right out of college, landing a position as an in-house editor for Boston advertising agency Modernista! and later relocating to San Francisco to serve as an in-house editor at agency Evolution Bureau. Kursel now resides in New York city with his wife Jackie and son Leon. 

In addition to being an accomplished editor, Kursel is a published writer and exhibited visual artist, having showcased his drawings and paintings in a number of group and solo shows. He also recently released the premiere issue of his original “comic ‘zine” for Bullseye Comics, entitled, “The Black Hand Guide You,” a series inspired by everyday American life, pop culture and world events.
