Spanish newspaper association files multimillion-euro suit against Meta over advertising practices

MADRID (AP) -- 

A Spanish association representing more than 80 newspapers has filed a lawsuit against Facebook parent Meta accusing it of unfair competition in online advertising by allegedly ignoring European Union rules on data protection.

In a statement, the Information Media Association said it is demanding 550 million euros ($600 million) from the social media giant. The association represents dozens of newspapers including Spain's principal dailies El País, El Mundo, ABC and La Vanguardia.

The association accuses Meta of "systematic and massive non-compliance" with EU data protection regulations between May 2018, when they took force, and July 2023.

It said Meta has repeatedly ignored the requirement that citizens give their consent to the use of their data for advertising profiling.

The company declined to comment, saying it hadn't seen the legal papers.

Art Directors Guild to induct production designer Lawrence G. Paull into ADG Hall of Fame

The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) will bestow its Hall of Fame Honor on legendary production designer Lawrence G. Paull, who passed away in 2019. 

The announcement was made by award show producers Michael Allen Glover, ADG and Megan Elizabeth Bell, ADG. 

Paull will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the 28th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, which will be held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom, Ovation Hollywood on Feb. 10, 2024.

Nominated for an Academy Award for his production design on the visually groundbreaking film Blade Runner, Paull has been an influence felt in films to this day. He also won the BAFTA award for production design for the film. Paull created beautifully designed spaces for Back to the Future, Romancing the Stone, City Slickers, Harlem Nights and Escape from L.A.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- 

A high-profile entertainment marketing consultant was targeted by a woman who had been stalking and threatening a film director friend of his before she fatally shot him after her forcing her way inside his Los Angeles home, according to prosecutors and court records obtained Thursday.

This week's slaying of Michael Latt sent shockwaves through Hollywood as the suspect faces charges of murder and burglary. Latt, 33, had worked on projects with filmmakers including Ryan Coogler and Ava DuVernay, as well as rap artist Common.

He was pronounced dead Monday at a hospital. Prosecutors allege that Jameelah Elena Michl, 36, knocked on his home's door and forced herself inside once it was open.

She had sought out Latt's home "after she targeted him for being friends with a woman she had been stalking," the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said in a news release Thursday. She allegedly fired at him with a semi-automatic handgun More

HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- 

Montana's first-in-the-nation law banning the video-sharing app TikTok in the state was blocked Thursday, one month before it was set to take effect, by a federal judge who called the measure unconstitutional.

The ruling delivered a temporary win for the social media company that has argued Montana's Republican-controlled Legislature went "completely overboard" in trying to regulate the app. A final ruling will come at a later date after the legal challenge moves through the courts.

U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy said the ban "oversteps state power and infringes on the Constitutional right of users and businesses" while singling out the state for its fixation on purported Chinese influence.

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) -- 

The parent company of Instagram and Facebook has sued the Federal Trade Commission in an attempt to stop the agency from reopening a 2020 privacy settlement with the company that would prohibit it from profiting from data it collects on users under 18.

In a lawsuit filed late Wednesday in federal court in Washington, D.C., Meta Platforms Inc. said it is challenging "the structurally unconstitutional authority exercised by the FTC" in reopening the privacy agreement.

"Meta respectfully requests that this Court declare that certain fundamental aspects of the Commission's structure violate the U.S. Constitution, and that these violations render unlawful the FTC Proceeding against Meta," the company says in its complaint.

The dispute stems from a 2020 consent agreement Meta made with the FTC that also had the social media giant pay a record $5 billion fine over privacy violations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- 

Academy Awards enthusiasts won't have to stay up quite as late to hear the best picture winner in March.

The 96th Oscars will begin one hour early, with the official show starting at 7 p.m. Eastern for the first time, ABC said Thursday. The official pre-show will also begin earlier, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.

The show has traditionally begun at 8 p.m. Despite various experiments to keep the runtime to three hours, the broadcast has sometimes stretched into the 11 o'clock hour.

The Oscars are broadcast globally in more than 200 territories and film academy membership has also become more international in recent years. Those involved in the show, from the film academy to the network, have also been working to get ratings back to pre-pandemic levels and making modest gains.
