W+K alum Achilles Li named group creative director at Translation

Translation has expanded its creative leadership roster with the hiring of Achilles Li. Working closely with chief creative officer John Norman, Li will serve as group creative director for the independent agency’s NBA and Champs Sports accounts. He brings years of experience in the world of international sports marketing to bear on behalf of the two athletic brands.

Prior to joining Translation, Li spent over three years as Executive Creative Director at Wieden + Kennedy Shanghai, touching nearly every one of the award-winning agency’s accounts as a team leader or lead creative. His time at W+K Shanghai spawned an assortment of celebrated creative work for a variety of media and markets—from the international appeal of Jeep Brand’s “Built Free” global campaign to the city-specific insights of Nike’s “Beijing City Attack,” which radically transformed Nike Basketball’s presence in the Chinese market. Li first signed on with the agency in 2006 as a creative, following a two-year tour of duty as sr. copywriter at Leo Burnett Hong Kong. Before that, he served as sr. copywriter at JWT Hong Kong.

His work has been recognized by competitions including the CLIOs, D&AD, and the Spikes Asia Festival of Creativity.

Colin McGreal named creative director at Reel FX

Digital studio Reel FX, Dallas/Santa Monica, has added Colin McGreal as creative director. McGreal is a versatile creative director and designer with over two decades of branded content experience working with such clients as Verizon, American Express, Ford, Samsung, Wendy’s, Goodyear, Toyota and Time Warner Cable.

McGreal most recently worked as creative director on Reel FX’s Hunger Games VR Experience for Lionsgate/Samsung, which launched during NY Comic-Con. His other Reel FX VR work includes the “You vs. Sharapova” Virtual Reality experience for American Express, which launched at the 2015 US Open, and the Pacific Rim Jaeger Pilot VR Experience for out of Legendary Pictures.

“As someone who has engaged with a diverse collection of studios, Reel FX has continuously grown more attractive as I’ve watched them aggressively embrace new platforms in the entertainment and commercial world,” notes McGreal. “It is this commitment to staying ahead of the curve that has drawn me to formalize our long-standing relationship.”

McGreal, a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, cut his professional chops by toting cans of film for a film lab in Hell’s Kitchen on a midnight shift and not quitting after getting mugged his second night on the job. Tiring of the vampire shift, he moved to designing boards at R/GA, learning a whole new facet of the industry. After directing his first spots in Saigon, McGreal worked as creative director for studios such as Charlex, Shilo, Spontaneous, Suspect and HUGE, completing spots for agencies such as McCann-Erickson, Saatchi, Digitas, Publicis, JWT and BBDO.

Jason Cook joins Flavor as creative director

Creative production studio Flavor has brought Jason Cook aboard its Los Angeles staff as creative director.

An L.A. native, Cook is an award-winning creative director and graphic designer who has spent more than 10 years working for some of the top design companies in the advertising industry. For the past two years, he has been freelancing as a creative director/director for Arsenal FX, Rabbit Content, Stardust, Troika, We Are Royale and others. Prior to that, he spent three years as a creative director for the LA office of Superfad, contributing to campaigns for the likes of Coca-Cola, Pella Windows and Visa Olympics while directing spots for Fiat, THQ, and League of Legends on the Mac. Cook was also partner/creative director for NYLON for three years, and that followed more than seven years working as a freelancer after a stint as Brand New School’s very first intern. Cook earned his degree in graphic design from Art Center College of Design in 2001, and subsequently taught there as well.

According to Flavor EP Darren Jaffe, Cook’s extensive background in traditional and motion graphic design also includes work in narrative in the 3D realm, as well as live-action direction. “Jason always looks to solve the issues that are most appropriate for a project without being constrained by specific techniques,” said Jaffe. “He brings so much to the group in terms of leading teams, building client relationships and building brands.”

Tyler Witkin named sr. strategic planner at the community

Cross-cultural agency the community, part of SapientNitro, has appointed Tyler Witkin as a sr. strategic planner. In this newly created position, Witkin will be charged with integrating consumer insights and research into the agency’s brand stories. Based in Miami, she will report directly to Andrew Speyer, executive director of planning and strategy.

“The cultural fluidity and rapid evolution of today’s consumers brings new opportunities for us to create a competitive advantage for our clients,” said Speyer. “Tyler’s understanding of how culture and trends can escalate the relevance of brands will further help us deliver to our clients.”

Prior to joining the community, Witkin was at Cavalry Agency in Chicago, most recently as director of strategic planning. While there, she directed strategy for several of MillerCoors’ brands and its new product innovations pipeline. Before that, she was a strategic planner at FCB where she led development of strategy for Newell Rubbermaid brands including Sharpie, PaperMate and Expo, as well as Valspar Paint and Kmart.

Creative marketing and production company New Wave Entertainment has brought Andrew Kobliska aboard as VP of marketing & brand strategy. Tara Holmes named EP of color & finishing at Nice Shoes

Production and post studio Nice Shoes has brought on executive producer Tara Holmes to lead the studio’s Color & Finishing division. Holmes joins Nice Shoes having acted as director of creative services at Company 3, EP of Post Production at AllDayEveryDay, and most recently as sr. producer at Cutting Room. Her hiring follows the addition of Angela Bowen as EP for Nice Shoes Creative Studio, with the two divvying up management of the studio’s creative offerings and resources while also partnering on full-service projects.

“I’m looking forward to working with Angela to expand on our clients’ perception of what Nice Shoes can achieve,” said Holmes. “We want to ensure that there’s a seamless collaborative experience for our clients, whether they’re working with Color & Finishing, Creative Studio, or the whole team.”

Holmes’ experience at previous studios includes collaborations with such brands as Calvin Klein on its first ever Super Bowl spot, overseeing live color grading for Express in Times Square and on Snickers’ memorable Super Bowl spot starring Betty White. She will manage a color and finishing talent roster at Nice Shoes which includes Chris Ryan, Lenny Mastrandrea, Ron Sudul, Gene Curley, Sal Malfitano, Oscar Oboza, Phil Choe, Russ Bigsby and Jason Farber.

Holmes will also work closely with managing director Justin Pandolfino to expand and support the Remote Color Grading network, which connects Nice Shoes’ artists with partner studios throughout North America. In addition to working with the company’s remote partners, Holmes will also focus on building relationships in Chicago and Minneapolis, where Nice Shoes recently established satellite studios headed up by Sudul and Oboza, respectively.

“Even with all of their expansion in the past few years, Nice Shoes has held onto the family vibe and camaraderie that has drawn clients for years. They’re not a division of some conglomerate,” added Holmes. “It appealed to me as a client, and it appealed to me even more when I was offered the position. Jeff Blodgett joins Zoic Studios as exec producer

Visual effects house Zoic Studios has added Jeff Blodgett as executive producer. Blodgett has over two decades of experience as an EP in VFX/animation, with lengthy stints at studios Sight Effects, Radium/Reel FX and Brickyard VFX. Blodgett joins current Zoic commercial division EPs Ian Unterreiner and Matt Thunell. Over the past two years, Zoic has gained traction and put considerable resources into experiential work and advanced visualization research and development. The addition of Blodgett comes at a time of growth and further diversification of the studio that has offered award-winning visual effects and design for film, television and advertising since 2002.

Hailing from Massachusetts, Blodgett headed West to follow his creative passion to work in the entertainment industry. He joined Sight Effects in 1996, spending nearly 10 years producing over 300 commercials for the shop, including the original BMW Films out of Fallon, directed by top Hollywood talent including Guy Ritchie. Blodgett moved on to serve as an EP of commercials at Radium/Reel FX, working on spots for such clients at Target, BMW, Pepsi and Fidelity. He came on board with Brickyard VFX in 2010, spending five years as an EP for the company with offices in Santa Monica, Calif., and Boston.

Editor Kyle Brown joins Arcade Edit

Arcade Edit has added editor Kyle Brown to its roster. Brown will be based out of Arcade’s L.A. office with his talents available to clients across the U.S.

As an editor, Brown has worked on many high-profile spots, including a GE spot featuring Jeff Goldblum and directed by cult favorite directing duo--and frequent collaborators--Tim & Eric. Brown also worked on Intel’s “Project Daniel,” which took home top prizes at Cannes, The One Show, The Clios, and Curator’s Recognition at AICP. Brown’s most recent projects include the well-received Super Bowl spot “Win at Glue” for Loctite, Nike’s “No Maybes” and the Mercandantes’ latest piece for Netflix.

“Kyle has a very diverse range and editorial style, something that is very much reflected in his work,” said Damian Stevens, managing partner, Arcade Edit.

Originally from the Bay Area, Brown landed in L.A by way of UC Santa Barbara. He started his career on the production side, benefiting from his time working in-house at several established production companies as both a treatment writer and in-house editor. Brown’s experience working through the commercial creative process, and the resulting relationships with directorial talent he formed, opened up many doors, including the opportunity to be involved in national campaign work, as well as to serve as lead editor of Headcase, a half-hour comedy show on Starz. Brown has also had the opportunity to work with many top ad agencies and brands on a number of projects, including commercials, documentaries and long-form narrative projects. Brown comes over to Arcade from NO6.

Kitty Snyder named director of creative partnerships for Beast, Company 3 and Method Studios in Atlanta

Postproduction veteran Kitty Snyder has been appointed director of creative partnerships for the Atlanta branches of Beast, Company 3 and Method Studios, co-located Deluxe Creative Services companies. A longtime local, Snyder will cultivate existing client relationships, establish new ones, and match projects with the right artists and solutions. Well-versed in all aspects of production and post, she is equipped to readily address the challenges of varied projects.

Snyder comes to Deluxe Creative Services Atlanta from ad agency Huge Inc., where she served as a commercial producer for clients like Airheads Candy and often brought her projects to Beast, Company 3 and Method for post. She also spent more than a decade at post facility Crawford Media Services collaborating with a large team of artists and the production company now known as Chorus Films. Snyder got her start in the post industry as a coordinating producer and writer for HGTV and GPTV shows, and various freelance producers. She is also a singer-songwriter with her band called The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants, and can be seen playing out in clubs around Atlanta.

Tina Allan joins BBDO NY as EVP, director data solutions

Industry veteran Tina Allan is joining BBDO New York in the newly created role of EVP, director data solutions.  Allan’s goal will be to help “the work even better” by taking fuller advantage of all the analytical tools available at BBDO and elevating its existing partnership with Annalect, Omnicom’s marketing technology platform, to augment what the agency already offers. She was most recently chief client officer at RAPP. Allan will become a member of BBDO New York’s senior management team.
