David Cronenberg, the acclaimed director and recent winner of the Toronto Film Critics Association’s (TFCA) Company 3 Clyde Gilmour Award, has selected Kelly Fyffe-Marshall as the recipient of $50,000 in postproduction services.

The TFCA, along with Company 3 VP and GM James Fraser, presented the award to Cronenberg at its recent gala awards dinner in downtown Toronto. The award honors a Canadian who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement and/or history of Canadian cinema. Past winners include Elwy Yost, Deepa Mehta, Norman Jewison and Tantoo Cardinal. The award comes with a pay-it-forward prize of $50,000 in post services to a filmmaker of the winner’s choice.

Kelly Fyffe-Marshall is best known for her two-part short film Black Bodies, which won the Changemaker Award at the 2020 TIFF, and the 2021 Canadian Screen Award for Best Live Action Short Drama. She also won the TFCA’s 2020 Stella Artois Jay Scott Prize for an emerging artist.

Cronenberg said, “For me, this is a potent award to be giving because it specifically addresses the realities of postproduction, which means that a film has actually been made and is being completed. There’s nothing more exciting than welcoming a new filmmaker with a strong new creation, and that the Company 3 Award has contributed to that emergence in a substantial, professional way is especially satisfying.”

On receiving the award which will be applied to her feature film, When Morning Comes, Fyffe-Marshall shared, “Making an indie film is often the only way to tell marginalized stories. But these stories, our stories, don’t deserve to stay on the sidelines. The success of When Morning Comes allows us to make ripples in the Canadian film landscape opening the doors for so many to follow. I am so thankful and appreciative to David Cronenberg for championing my film and selecting it to be the recipient of the Clyde Gilmour Award from TFCA and Company 3.”

Company 3’s Fraser said, “We applaud David’s choice to select Kelly Fyffe-Marshall as the recipient. Kelly is a dynamic director and an impactful storyteller and Company 3 is excited to help her realize her vision for her feature film, When Morning Comes.”
